The Bank Street College of Education (610 W 112th St, New York, NY) recently completed an extensive code-required renovation of their façade. I managed the fabrication of the custom mounting system, and installation of the 11’ x 3’ banners to grace the building’s new brick exterior. The banners are solid vinyl to convey the images at their best–as opposed to using mesh to reduce wind load. To handle this load, NSN engineered and fabricated 3” diameter, 4’ long pole brackets on sturdy ¾” base plates. These stout brackets would then be mounted through the brick face to the masonry behind it with hefty 14” long, 5/8” threaded rod chemical anchor system. Pipe spacers protect the brick façade from being compressed into the masonry. My mechanics core drilled the brick to further maintain the new bricks’ pristine appearance.
The lovely banners were suspended from fiberglass rods mounted with J-hooks and aircraft cable to provide maximum flatness and site safety. On the day of install, Columbia University was moving kids into the dorm across the street. They closed the street without a permit citing eminent domain. Since our permits prevailed, they got salty and insisted we have a flagger per our DOT. Guess who ended up flagging.
Now a march of brightly colored banners will greet generations of students, parents and future teachers.
